Am I suitable for a hair transplant?
Hair transplantation is suitable for those who suffer from baldness, both women and men, although it is necessary to have hair available for the extraction. For men, the optimal age for this procedure is between 30 and 40 years old, since before 30, hair loss may not be stable. In women, there is no specific ideal age; they can undergo surgery from the age of 18 to 80 if they wish.
There are two methods for performing hair implants:
The FUE method of hair transplantation is performed under local anesthesia on an outpatient basis and lasts between six and eight hours. It consists of extracting the grafts follicular unit by follicular unit using a micro-punch of between 0.8 and 0.9 millimeters in diameter.
The grafts are preserved in saline and implanted hair by hair immediately afterward.
The FUE method has the advantage of not leaving scars, but it takes much longer. It takes 3 to 3.5 hours for 1,000 grafts and 5 to 6 hours for 2,000 grafts.
This technique is ideal for mild to moderate baldness.
The FUT method, also known as the “strip” technique, consists of removing under local anesthesia a strip of skin one centimeter wide, as long as possible, and then reimplanting the hair bulbs in the bald areas using a triarchitectonic suture.
Depending on the case, up to 6,000 hairs can be transplanted in a session lasting between 2 and 5 hours.
This technique is generally recommended for patients with diffuse or very advanced alopecia, as well as for those with frizzy hair.
Advantages and disadvantages of hair transplantation

At the first consultation, the physician will evaluate the causes of alopecia through tests and a detailed diagnosis, which may include factors such as diet, disease, medication, and heredity. Depending on the result, a personalized treatment plan will be designed.
Before surgery, a blood test and, depending on the patient’s age and history, an electrocardiogram will be performed. The patient should wash their hair with an antiseptic shampoo the morning of the transplant and start antibiotic treatment the day before surgery. It is also recommended to avoid stimulants such as coffee, tea, and alcohol.
The transplant is performed under local anesthesia in the operating room and its duration varies between 4 and 8 hours, depending on the number of grafts and the patient’s characteristics.
After the transplant, it is essential to follow the instructions for the care of the treated area, including daily washing of the hair without rubbing. Crusting and swelling are normal in the following days. Pain, although infrequent, can be treated with analgesics if necessary.

Complications are rare in hair transplantation. When they occur, they are usually bruising or pain, and more rarely, loss of sensation in the transplanted area, epidermal cysts, or infections.
