What are the phases of skin scarring?
During the first 3 or 4 days, the inflammatory reaction causes vasodilation and increases the permeability of the injury. During this phase, the wound is covered by a blood clot, primarily due to the action of platelets, which limits blood loss.
During this phase, cells called fibroblasts appear in large numbers to produce collagen, elastin, and other elements of the cellular matrix of the dermis. This is the beginning of scar development.
Once the connective tissue reaches its maximum level, the collagen fibers are remodeled. Initially, the scab falls off and the skin recovers its layers. The number of fibroblasts will decrease, as will the number of blood vessels. This phase can last over 15 months, and certain precautions are necessary:
- The skin must be protected from potential trauma.
- The skin should not be subjected to excessive pulling (as is common with wounds on joints).
- The skin must be protected from sunlight to prevent hyperpigmentation.
- The skin should be cleaned with a gentle soap and kept well-hydrated.
